• Have an engaged project sponsor who knows the duties of the role.
• Resource project teams properly.
• Structure your project to be a success & Learn from past failures.
• Don’t try to fit square pegs in round holes, procure and implement systems that fit your business needs.
• Fit your project to a methodology not the other way around.
• Give project managers more power and authority.
• Have an escalation and decision making policy that helps delivery and removes impasses.
• Build a culture that embraces project management and wants to become knowledgeable on its benefits and value.
• Project managers should not be afraid to say no, if you are not comfortable with any aspect of the project delivery say no & raise concerns accordingly.
• Don’t work in a culture of blame, them & us, it doesn’t work and leads to project failure.
• Vendors & product/system owners need to own their products and be clear on existing and future functionality.
• Let project managers manage, it sounds simple but having them do business analysis, solutions architect or/and change management work prevents them from managing their projects and leads to delays
• Educate stakeholders on what project management is to avoid unnecessary and time wasting questions during project delivery, specifically meetings.
• Understand the different types of testing and the value each type brings, the dependencies and the natural flow of each one too.
• Don’t spend too much time discussing go lives as they are meaningless unless you concentrate on all the milestones that come before.
